Bonaire – Day 1.5

November 8, 2009 · Filed Under Diving

We arrived yesterday afternoon here on the beautiful island of Bonaire. Our flight from Huntsville to Atlanta was quick, roughly 29 minutes. We were delayed on the runway in Huntsville due to issue with incoming flights into Atlanta. As soon as we landed in Atlanta, we ran to the next gate to catch our connecting flight to Bonaire.

Once in Bonaire, we went through customs, picked up our rental truck, and headed over to Captain Don’s. Check-in at Captain Don’s was a breeze. Our bungalow is quite nice and has more than enough room. We have two bedrooms, two bath rooms, living area, kitchen, and outside patio.

After we settled into our bungalow we joined the rest of the SDI group for our dive briefing over at Rum Runner, the Captain Don’s bar and grill. Since we we were already at the bar, we decided to stick around awhile and enjoy/treat ourselves to a (several) drink(s). Since we had decided to drink, that meant no diving until the next day. After a long day of travel and drinking we decided to turn in for the evening.

Day two began late, roughly around 10:00. Ronda and I hit up the breakfast buffet and enjoyed some tasty pancakes and bacon. After letting our food settle, we went for our first dive.

The first dive was our “check-out” dive. The dive were we check out all of our equipment. We check our buoyancy, and in general just make sure everything is intact and adjusted properly. We did have some issues with Ronda’s BC, and a issue with my weighting. After some patience, we had everything in check and was off diving.

The water was AWESOME. We didn’t see anything major, just lots of reef formations, and various sea life.

As the trip proceeds, I hope to post recaps so that I don’t forget details and can catalog our first “real” dive trip.

Great pics Steve! Hope you and Ronda are having a great time and enjoying the beautiful marine life in Bonaire. Its a far cry from the quarry I must say. Keep us informed and make sure you do the boat dives every day. The best sites for me is Oil slick and Rapale(S). later.
