Leaking Faucet

November 4, 2008 · Filed Under General

So I’ve known for some time that we had a leaking faucet outside our house. I haven’t given it much thought until we got our utility bill this last month. Our water bill alone was $170 dollars. So now it has my attention. With much hesitation I ask Warren (the father-in-law) if he could give it a look. He said sure, I’ll take care of it.

Well today Warren called and said he would be by later this afternoon. I get home around 4′ish and he was here working. I went out front to see how things were going and he said good, but he needed a few things. So he ask for some old wash rags and bread. I laugh and he said he would show me what the bread was for. So I proceeded to go in the house, and when I opened the door… smoke, everywhere there is smoke. So I go running outside to the front of the house where Warren was working and ask him what was going on. He said, “the backer board got a little hot but it’s nothing to worry about”. So I go to investigate even further and went further into the house and the laundry room was FULL of smoke. So at this point I’m pissed and once again go outside and talk to Warren who basically blows the whole thing off.

So not taking a chance I called the fire department (which is less and .25 miles from the house). Within minutes they arrive and look into the smoke. They found that the board around the faucet did catch on fire and also a water pipe had been melting.

Fire Damage

So after the fire department left Warren “the father-in-law” finished fixing the faucet and turns the water back on.

I’m still pissed because Warren blows the whole thing off as not being an issue. Said, “the whole downstairs should be full of smoke, the board around the faucet got HOT“. NO SHIT, and caught on fire.

Really Steve, if you were hesitant to call him in the first place, why didn’t you call a plumber? The free labor has always been convinient before. I know you have spent a lot of money down there but the labor came from his heart!!! Just Sayin. M

Then your trusty State Farm Agent helped restore your home! Let me know if you need anything else. I’ll be leaving the office in a few (Jillian is sick) but you can call me on my cell if you need anything.

@ Martha – Like the $2,000 building that cost us $8,000 or the $20 faucet that will now cost us $1,000. I hardly call that free. If he would just admit he screwed up versus saying he did nothing wrong it would be different. But hey, lesson learned, don’t have family work on stuff.
